Grade 10 checklist: deepen interests and lead

In Grade 10, go deeper rather than wider. Colleges and employers value commitment and leadership in a few things over a long list of clubs.

Lead something

• Take a role with responsibility: organize an event, lead a team, start a club or run a project.
• Keep a record: what you did, how many people it helped, what changed.

Tests and courses

• Take a practice PSAT, SAT or ACT to learn the format. There is no pressure yet.
• Ask about dual enrollment: college courses taken in high school, often low cost or free.

Career and money

• Shadow a professional for half a day.
• Open a savings account and track your spending for one month.
