How to help, without taking over
Choose one or two, and go deep
Colleges and employers value steady commitment and leadership in a few activities more than a long list of memberships.
Ask at school first
Most of these organizations work through school chapters with a teacher advisor. If there is no chapter, many organizations explain how to start one.
Plan the costs early
Expect chapter dues, competition fees, uniforms and travel to state or national conferences. Ask the advisor for the full-year cost and any fundraising or fee waivers.
Use the timeline
Most clubs recruit in the fall, compete in winter and spring, and hold national events in summer. Scholarship deadlines cluster from October to March of senior year.
Let the student lead
Encourage your child to run for an officer role, organize a project or mentor a younger member. Leadership stories matter in applications and interviews.
Students write their own applications
Help with planning, proofreading and deadlines, but the essays and answers should be the student's own words.
Never pay to apply for a scholarship
Legitimate scholarships are free to apply. Be wary of fees, guarantees, or requests for bank details.
Always confirm on the official site
