How admission really works

Engineering, medicine and more.

Medicine

Every MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seat uses NEET UG. Government college seats: 15% All-India quota through MCC counselling, 85% state quota through your state's counselling. Private and deemed colleges have their own quotas and higher fees.

Engineering, national

JEE Main for NITs, IIITs and central institutes (JoSAA). JEE Advanced, for top JEE Main scorers, for the IITs.

Engineering, your state

State government and private colleges admit through the state CET: MHT CET (Maharashtra), KCET and COMEDK (Karnataka), AP and TS EAPCET, WBJEE, KEAM (Kerala), OJEE, GUJCET, and TNEA (Tamil Nadu, by Class 12 marks). Some states also use JEE Main scores. Most run April–June.

Private universities

BITSAT (BITS Pilani), VITEEE, SRMJEEE and others run their own tests, usually April–May.

Central universities

CUET UG for B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BBA and more at Delhi University, BHU, JNU and other central universities.

Reservation

Government seats follow reservation rules (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwD) and state domicile rules. Check the information bulletin for your category.

Coaching & tutoring

Coaching, the smart way.

27% of school students

use private coaching (30.7% in cities, 25.5% in villages). City families spend about ₹9,950 a year per student on coaching in Classes 11–12.

NSS Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education 2025

22.8 lakh · 15.4 lakh · 13.5 lakh

students registered for NEET UG, JEE Main and CUET UG in 2025. Big numbers, but a clear plan matters more than a big coaching bill.

NTA, 2025

Large national institutes

Classroom and online programmes for JEE, NEET, CUET, UPSC and more (for example ALLEN, Aakash, PhysicsWallah, Unacademy). Structured tests; big batches.

Local academies

Smaller batches in your city, often for board exams, state CETs and foundation courses. Quality varies, so visit and try a class.

Home and online tutors

One-to-one help for a weak subject. Best for short, focused goals.

Free government options

NTA Abhyas mock tests, NCERT books, DIKSHA, SWAYAM, NPTEL and PM eVIDYA cover a lot at no cost. Start here.

Government rules for coaching centres (2024)
  • No coaching enrolment below age 16; students join only after Class 10.
  • No guarantees of ranks or marks, and no misleading advertising.
  • Fees must be fair and written; if a student leaves midway, the remaining fee is refunded pro-rata within 10 days.
  • Centres must publish tutor qualifications, courses, duration, hostel facilities and fees, and support student well-being.

Ministry of Education guidelines; each state enforces them.

Before you pay
  • Ask for a free demo class and the batch size.
  • Get the refund policy in writing before you pay; avoid paying years in advance.
  • Check that your child still gets 8–9 hours of sleep, play and family time.
  • Watch for stress; talk early and openly. Tele-MANAS (14416) offers free mental-health support.
  • Coaching teaches exams. Leadership, communication, character and AI skills need practice too.

A wise aspirant’s checklist
  • Plan B first: finish a degree and skills that lead to a job, so the exam is a choice, not a risk.
  • Know the odds: about 933 UPSC posts in 2026 against several lakh candidates. Also apply to state PSC, SSC, banking and other exams that fit you.
  • Try free and official resources before paying. Never pay for ‘guaranteed selection’; the 2024 coaching rules ban such promises.
  • Check building and fire safety in coaching hubs and hostels. In July 2024, three aspirants died when a basement library in Delhi flooded; this led to stricter checks.
  • Set a time limit (for example, two or three attempts), then review honestly with family.
  • Look after mental health. Tele-MANAS (14416) is free and available 24×7.
