How education works in India.
A simple map of the Indian system: the NEP 2020 stages, board exams, streams, entrance exams, degrees, skill paths and the words you will hear.
The big picture
Six things to know.
The Right to Education Act (2009) makes education free and compulsory for every child aged 6 to 14, in a neighbourhood school.
Education is shared between the central government and the states. Each state runs its own school board, and CBSE, CISCE and NIOS work across the country.
The National Education Policy 2020 groups schooling into four stages by age, from age 3 to 18, with play-based learning early and more choice later.
Board exams at the end of Class 10 and Class 12 matter most. Class 12 marks set eligibility for entrance exams and admissions.
Engineering, medicine, law, design and central universities admit mainly through national or state entrance tests such as JEE, NEET, CUET and CLAT.
Government schools, government-aided schools, private schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and open schooling (NIOS).

After school
The main paths.
Arts, science and commerce at state, central and private universities. Central universities admit through CUET.
B.Tech or B.E. through JEE (IITs, NITs, IIITs) or state entrance tests and private university tests.
Every MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seat goes through NEET UG, then MCC or state counselling.
ICAI's route: CA Foundation after Class 12, then CA Intermediate, about 2 years of practical training (articleship) and CA Final. Graduates can enter directly at Intermediate. Related routes: Company Secretary (CS, through ICSI) and Cost and Management Accountant (CMA, through ICMAI).
CLAT for the National Law Universities; other universities have their own tests. A 3-year LLB is also possible after a degree.
Practical engineering diplomas; graduates can join B.Tech in the second year (lateral entry) in many states.
Industrial Training Institutes train electricians, fitters, welders and more, with apprenticeships through national schemes.
