Grade 8 checklist: set up a strong start to high school

Grade 8 is the best year to start, because nothing is urgent yet. A few calm decisions now make high school easier and open more doors later.

What matters most this year

  • Choose high school courses that stretch you without overloading you, especially in math.
  • Build one study habit you can keep: a weekly plan and 30 minutes of focused work a day.
  • Try two new activities and notice which one gives you energy.
  • Start a simple folder for certificates, projects and photos of your work.

For parents

Ask open questions instead of giving answers: What did you enjoy this week? What felt hard? Students trust their parents' advice more than any other source, yet fewer than half of parents talk with their teens about plans after high school. Start the habit now, while the stakes are low.
