Roadmap for Parents · Canada · Grade 8 to acceptance · Lesson 1 of 2

Meet Sara. Her daughter Leah is starting Grade 8. Five years, one at a time: plan the year, then support it.

Plan the year.

“Coach the plan. Let your child own it.”

Plan the year means: coach, not manager · open doors · real numbers · trusted sources · our child decides.

Grade 8 to acceptance

Each year has a few clear jobs. Plan the year, then make it happen.

Grade 8

Courses that keep doors open, a weekly routine, one curiosity, and an RESP step.

Grade 9

A strong foundation, one or two activities, volunteer hours started, and early help.

Grade 10

Grade 11 courses that lead to Grade 12 prerequisites, a deeper role, and real costs.

Grade 11

The marks that count protected, a balanced list, references and scholarship prep.

Grade 12

Applications through the right systems, supplementary forms, aid on time, and an offer accepted.

How the course works

Five grades, two lessons each, one story.

Why

Parents want to help but often don’t know what each year needs, or where support ends and taking over begins. This course gives you each year’s jobs, and a calm system to do them.

When

Grade 8 to acceptance: five grade levels (8, 9, 10, 11 and 12), each with the same two lessons at the right depth for that year.

What

Per grade: “Plan the year” and “Support it all year”, each a short interactive story with Sara and a 10-concept check (100% to move on, unlimited fresh retries), plus a Parent Studio artifact and a month-by-month calendar. Both lessons and both artifacts earn that grade’s certificate.

Who

Parents and guardians of students in Grades 8–12. Your teen’s course, Your College Journey, tells the same story from Leah’s side.

How

Start at your child’s current grade, or at Grade 8 to see the whole journey. Lesson 2 opens after Lesson 1 reaches 100%. Artifacts are self-reviewed with a 4-part rubric. No rankings, no timers, no public scores.

Where you live

The planning habits work everywhere. The admissions and aid steps differ by country.

CanadaThis edition follows Canadian admissions: Grade 11 and 12 marks in prerequisite courses, provincial application systems (OUAC and ontariocolleges.ca in Ontario, EducationPlannerBC, ApplyAlberta, CEGEP in Quebec), supplementary applications, RESPs with government grants, and provincial student aid. Rules differ by province; check yours.
QuebecStudents finish Secondary V, then attend CEGEP (pre-university or technical) before university. The planning habits here still apply; check CEGEP and university requirements.
Applying to US colleges from Canada? The US edition covers the SAT or ACT, the Common App, US financial aid and Decision Day.

What the research says

The methods in this course are informed by published research. The research supports these methods; it does not prove that this new course works. We’ll pilot it and report what we find, honestly.

Grade 8 · Harvard University and Duke UniversityHill and Tyson’s review found that parents’ conversations about learning and the future were more strongly linked to achievement than homework help.
Grade 9 · University of RochesterSelf-determination research (Deci and Ryan) shows that warmth plus support for a young person’s autonomy builds motivation better than control.
Grade 10 · Government of CanadaProgram data on the Canada Education Savings Grant and Canada Learning Bond show how early, regular RESP saving grows with government contributions.
Grade 11 · Competition Bureau of CanadaThe Competition Bureau warns consumers that “guaranteed” offers with upfront fees are common signs of scams.
Grade 12 to acceptance · Harvard University and Stanford UniversityBettinger, Long, Oreopoulos and Sanbonmatsu found that help with financial aid applications increased post-secondary enrolment.

For your child

Your child’s course, Your College Journey, follows the same five years from Leah’s side. Doing both, one lesson each, then talking for ten minutes, is the strongest way to use them.
