Getting expert help

Choosing a counselor or independent education consultant

Start with your school counselor

They know your school, write the counselor recommendation and send your records. Meet them early (Grade 9–10) and often.

Look for professional standards

Reputable independent consultants usually belong to professional associations with ethics codes:

Questions to ask

  • What’s your training and professional membership?
  • How many students do you work with, and how often will we meet?
  • What exactly is included, and what does it cost in total?
  • Do you receive payments from colleges or programs?
  • How do you make sure essays stay the student’s own work?

Red flags

  • Guaranteed admission or scholarships
  • Writing essays for the student
  • Pressure to decide or pay quickly
  • Hidden fees or commissions not disclosed
  • Asking for your passwords or to submit for you
